GEOGRAPHY OF AYARKUNNAM GRAMA PANCHAYAT
Ayarkunnam is a Grama Panchayat in Kottayam District of Kerala. The Panchayat has the characteristic geographical features and climatic conditions of central Kerala.
1. LOCATION
- Located approximately 10–12 km east of Kottayam town.
- The Panchayat is connected with the urban areas of Kottayam towards the west and the Meenachil river-basin region towards the east.
- Most areas of the Panchayat are situated at an elevation of approximately 20–60 metres above sea level.
2. TOPOGRAPHY
- The terrain consists mainly of moderately sloping hill regions and low-lying plains.
- Red laterite soil and loamy soil are commonly found.
- The soil is generally fertile and suitable for agricultural activities.
3. WATER RESOURCES
- Small streams, ponds and water-storage structures form part of the Panchayat's water resources.
- Groundwater is an important source of drinking water.
- Water availability increases during the monsoon, while some areas may experience water scarcity during summer.
4. CLIMATE
- The Panchayat experiences a tropical monsoon climate.
- Good rainfall is received from both the South-West Monsoon and North-East Monsoon.
- The average annual rainfall is approximately 2,500–3,500 mm.
- Temperatures generally range between 22°C and 34°C.
5. FLORA AND FAUNA
- Rubber, coconut, pepper, nutmeg and banana are among the major crops cultivated in the region.
- Various species of birds, small animals and amphibians contribute to the area's biodiversity.
6. LAND USE
- Rubber cultivation occupies a significant share of the land use.
- Paddy fields, plantation crops, residential areas and institutional areas are also important land-use categories.
- Residential areas have been gradually increasing under the influence of urbanisation.
